City Participatory Slum Upgrading Index (BETA)
What is the C-PSUI?
The City Participatory Slum Upgrading Index (C-PSUI) is a self-administered tool (in BETA phase) to support city authorities and stakeholders to assess city-wide in-situ participatory slum upgrading. The C-PSUI (BETA) tool can be used to:
Take stock of the city's current slum upgrading policies, programmes, and practices
Monitor levels of community participation in slum upgrading across cities and over time
Identify practical ways to increase levels of community participation in, and success of, city-wide slum upgrading
Background
This 14 minute video provides an overview of the motivation, conceptual framework, and development process for the C-PSUI. We recommend watching this video before using the C-PSUI so that your team a clearer idea of what the tool is (and is not) designed to do.
How to
This 15 minute video explains how to use the C-PSUI (BETA) tool, including how to assemble the right stakeholders, access and complete questions, and calculate the participatory slum upgrading readiness and participation scores for your city.
Step 1. Assemble key stakeholders
It is important to assemble a representative group of stakeholders involved with your city's slum upgrading and local government to accurately and fully complete the C-PSUI BETA tool. At a minimum, stakeholders should include city urban planners and civil society organizations that work in/with the city's slum communities.
Step 2. Download & use tool

We encourage teams to use the Excel version of the C-PSUI BETA tool to be able to calculate index scores directly and access pre-calculated indicator values.
This will also allow users to gain a sense of the current index scoring system and better inform feedback on the tool. Be sure to download the linked document in Excel (functionality will not work in Google Sheets).

A printable PDF version of the tools is available. We will calculate C-PSUI BETA scores for teams who submit a PDF version of the completed tool.
Step 3. Submit results
